William Ford, known as Bill, was educated at Edinburgh and Oxford Universities. After obtaining his DPhil for work on lymphocytes, Ford returned to Edinburgh as lecturer in the department of therapeutics. In 1966 he was appointed to the scientific staff of the MRC Cellular Immunology Unit at Oxford and from 1972 was the senior lecturer in the department of pathology at Edinburgh. In 1974 Ford was appointed professor in experimental pathology at the University of Manchester and in 1983 he started the Immunology Department. Ford died in a road accident while on sabbatical in Canberra in 1984, aged only forty eight.
