Donnai gained her medical qualifications from the University of London in 1968, and became FRCP in 1984. She was senior registrar in medical genetics at St Mary's Hospital Manchester before being appointed consultant medical geneticist at St Mary's. She was a member of the Clinical Genetics Society and Manchester Medical Society . Donnai was particularly interested in birth defects. She was married to Paul Donnai.
