Baildam was born in Tanzania on 6 June 1957 and gained her medical education at the University of Manchester, qualifying in 1980. She held resident appointments at WythenshaweHospital before specialising in paediatrics with appointments at Booth Hall and Pendlebury Hospitals, and for the North West Regional Health Authority. Baildam was later appointed consultant paedicatrician to Booth Hall Hospital and honorary lecturer in child health at the University of Manchester. Eileen Baildam is married to Andrew David Baildam.
