Bateman studied at Oxford and St Thomas's Hospital, London. After qualifying, he held paediatric house and registrar appointments at St Thomas's Hospital, Bellvue Hospital New York, Hospital for Sick Children Great Ormond Street, Westminster Hospital, Queen Charlotte's Hospital and London Hospital. In 1939, Bateman was appointed honorary assistant physician at St Mary's Hospital Manchester. At the outbreak of war, Bateman was called up to the Medical Branch of the RAVR. He died in a flying accident on 14 March 1944 while serving in the Middle East.
