Cave, born on 13 September 1900, was an expert on human and comparative anatomy, physical anthropology and medical history. Cave studied at Victoria University Manchester where he was awarded a distinction in Hygiene and Preventative Medicine. Cave was editor of Manchester University Medical Students Gazette and worked as prosector at Manchester Museum. In 1924 he was appointed demonstrator in anatomy at Leeds University, and was promoted in 1926 to lecturer. In 1934 Cave was appointed curator of the anatomical museum at University College London and in 1946 was elected chair of anatomy at London University, where he remained until 1967.
