Gordon was born in Edinburgh on 28 May 1918. He was educated at Charterhouse School and Edinburgh University. After qualifying, Gordon held junior positions at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary and the Deaconess Hospital Edinburgh. In 1950 Gordon was appointed registrar at the National Hospital in Queen Square, a position he held until 1958. In 1955 he was also made senior registrar in neurology at St Mary's Hospital London. Gordon was later appointed consultant neurologist for Royal Manchester Children's Hospital and Booth Hall Children's Hospital Manchester. Gordon was a member of the Association of British Neurologists, the British Paediatric Association, the Brain Research Association and Manchester Medical Society .
