Allen worked at Royal Edinburgh Infirmary as a Psychiatrist, before gaining appointments as a child psychiatrist at Booth Hall Children's Hospital, Manchester and the Young Peoples Unit Macclesfield. He then became consultant child psychiatrist for Chester Health District. Allen was a member of Manchester Medical Society .
