Davies was educated at Manchester Grammar School and the University of Manchester, qualifying in 1965 and gaining his FRCS in 1970. He held junior and registrar appointments at MRI and Altrincham General Hospital before being appointed consultant surgeon to Stepping Hill Hospital Stockport in 1975.
