Bares was born in Cumbria on 24 March 1957 and gained his medical education at the University of Manchester, qualifying in 1980. Barnes held surgical appointments at South Manchester and Burnley Victoria Hospital before being appointed consultant urological surgeon to North Manchester and Bury General Hospitals. Barnes was awarded the FRCS (Edin) in 1984 and was a member of the British Association of Urological Surgeons.
