Bainbridge was a research fellow (respiratory diseases) at City Hospital Edinburgh before becoming senior registrar and honorary lecturer at the University of Dundee. From 1973 until 1990 Bainbridge was consultant physician at Trafford General Hospital Davyhulme Manchester. Bainbridge was a member of Manchester Medical Society , the British Thoracic Society, and Sale Medical and Dental Society.
