Goodfellow was born in Manchester on 18 January 1906, the son of Thomas Ashton Goodfellow. He was educated at Cambridge and completed his clinical training at Manchester where he was a house physician in 1930. After graduating from Cambridge, Goodfellow joined his father in general practice and also worked on research into effects of radiation on the blood at Christie Hospital Manchester, research which gained him his MD. During the war, Goodfellow served in the RNVR. He returned to his practice in Manchester in 1946 and was also lecturer in medical ethics at the University of Manchester. In 1949 he decided to leave general practice and was appointed medical superintendent to the Auckland Hospital, New Zealand. He returned to England in 1966 and joined a practice in Essex. He died on 15 October 1982 after a long illness.
