Cowan studied at the Victoria University Manchester and held house positions at MRI before being appointed senior resident medical officer for Township of South Manchester Hospital (later Withington Hospital). He later worked as a general practitioner in Bolton. Cowan was a member of Manchester Medical Society and Manchester Pathological Society.
