Greenhalgh studied medicine at Owens College Manchester. His professional career was spent in the Royal Navy, where he rose to be a surgeon commander, and Final Medical Examining Officer for the Admiralty Recruiting Service. He was the son of John Greenhalgh (MMC/2/GreenhalghJ).
