Gupta was born in India on 13 June 1934 and qualified at Calcutta. In 1975 Gupta was appointed consultant in radiotherapy and oncology at the Christie Hospital Manchester, a position he held until 1988 when he became deputy director in radiotherapy and oncology, retiring in 1999. He was also honorary lecturer in radiotherapy and oncology at the University of Manchester. Gupta was visiting professor in oncology to the National University of Argentina and was honorary consultant to IAEA and WHO. Gupta was also actively involved in many medical societies and committees and was a fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine.
