Cox was resident surgeon at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary before moving to Manchester where he practised in Eccles. In 1897 Cox went to Bowdon. He held the appointments of senior surgeon at Manchester Ear Hospital, and consulting aural surgeon to the Buxton Cottage Hospital, Altrincham General Hospital and the Manchester Warehousemen and Clerks' Association. Cox was active in the British Medical Association and was a member of the Edinburgh Royal Medical Society and Manchester Medical Society . Cox died on 24 September 1927.
