Guru-Murthy received his medical training at Stanley Medical College. He was registrar in radiology at Walton Hospital, Liverpool before being appointed senior registrar in radiology at Sefton General Hospital, Liverpool. Guru-Murthy was later consultant radiologist for Burnley, Pendle and Rossendale Health Authority, retiring in the 1990s. He was a fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine and the member of the Royal College of Radiologists.
