Birch began his career as a minister of the ancient Bach Chapel in Rusholme, Manchester. After the Act of Uniformity of 1662 he abandoned this ministerial function and practiced as a physician and surgeon in Grindlow, Manchester (near Longsight). Birch died in 1693.
