Gregory was born in Manchester on 17 February 1915, the son of the general practitioner Arnold Gregory (see above). He was educated at South Manchester and Manchester Grammar Schools and at the University of Manchester. After qualifying, Gregory was assistant medical officer at Withington Hospital Manchester and served in the RAMC. He then pursued a career in occupational health and was medical officer for a number of firms around England. Gregory was a member of the Society of Occupational Medicine, the British Occupational Hygiene Society, an associate member of the Royal College of General Practitioners and a fellow of Manchester Medical Society .
