Allison was born on 3 January 1937 and was educated at Manchester Grammar School. He held various house positions at Crumpsall Hospital, MRI, Oldham and District General Hospital and Royal Manchester Children's Hospital, Pendlebury. He later became Medical Registrar at Derbyshire Royal Infirmary. Allison was a member of Manchester Medical Society .
