Ethelston was born on 9 August 1805 and studied at Manchester Grammar School. He graduated from Pembroke College Cambridge in 1830 and then went on to study medicine. Ethelston was a member of the Royal College of Surgeons and practised in Manchester in the 1840s and 1850s.
