John Brown was born in Cornwall and studied at University college, London. He qualified LRCP and LSA in 1877; he took a MB ChB (1888), DPH (1889) MD (1889) from the Victoria University. A public health expert, brown published many papers and was MOH for Bacup, Lancashire. Two of his sons, John Percival brown and George Burrows Brown were medical practitioners.
