Campbell, the son of A.C.P. Campbell (see above), was born in Edinburgh on 3 May 1946. After studying at Edinburgh, Campbell held registrar positions at Sheffield and then at Cambridge where he worked in paediatrics. This interest in paediatrics was consolidated when he became leukaemia research fellow and honorary registrar at the Hospital for Sick Children, Great Ormond Street, London. In 1976 Campbell was appointed lecturer in paediatrics at Sheffield University. From 1978, Campbell worked as consultant paediatrician at Park Hospital Davyhulme (later Trafford General Hospital), Royal Manchester Children's Hospital and Christie Hospital, Manchester. From 2003 to 2006, he was medical director of the Trafford NHS Trust. He was also honorary lecturer in child health atthe University of Manchester. Campbell was a member of the British Paediatric Association, the Paediatric Research Society and the International Society of Paediatric Oncology. He has been President of the Manchester Paediatric Club.
