Granville was born on 7 October 1783 and practised as a physician in Italy, Greece, Turkey, Spain, Portugal, the West Indies, Russia and Germany. He came to England as an Italian refugee and lived in Manchester in 1811 or 1812 and was a member of the Manchester Literary and Philosophical Society. He was later in Russia and occasionally attended the Russian Royal Family. Granville later practised in London and published extensively on a wide range of subjects. Granville died on 3 March 1872 and his autobiography was published posthumously in 1874.
