Craig graduated MB ChB (1905) and MD (1907) from the University of Manchester. Craig was demonstrator in anatomy at the University of Manchester from 1905 until he resigned in 1907. He was then appointed house surgeon at MRI before becoming senior resident medical officer at Chorlton Union Hospital (later Withington Hospital Manchester) around 1910. Craig took a diploma in public health at the University in 1911. In 1912 Craig was appointed medical superintendent at Manchester Sanatorium, Abergele, and he was later an honorary surgeon at Westmorland County Hospital.
