Thomas Dean studied at Manchester Royal School of Medicine and qualified MRCS in 1851 and LSA in 1858; he held several appointments in the Manchester area, including senior surgeon at the Ardwick Dispensary, surgeon to the police force and medical referee to several assurance companies.
