Mercier Gamble was the son of Sam Gamble, a succesful Sheffield steel manufacturer who provided a number of scholarships for women undertaking medical degrees at the University of Manchester. Mercier Gamble received his medical education at Owens College Manchester and held junior appointments at MRI, Salford Royal Hospital, and Manchester Southern Hospital for Diseases of Women. After serving as a ship's surgeon, Gamble decided to work as a medical missionary and in 1907 gained the certificate from the London School for Tropical Medicine. From 1907 until 1913 Gamble was voluntary medical officer at the Baptist Missionary Society's hospital at San Salvador in the Congo region. He was particularly interested in entomology and made a number of collections of insects. During the first war, Gamble was appointed to the RAMC and was registrar in charge of Nell Lane Military Hospital. After war he became surgeon and medical superintendent to the Hospital, which later became Withington Hospital. Gamble was a fellow of the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, and was vice-president of Manchester Medical Society . Gamble died on 14 March 1939.
