Bevis was born in London on 28 May 1919. After studying at William Hulme's School Manchester and the University of Manchester, Bevis held house positions at Burnley Victoria Hospital and St Mary's Hospital Manchester. In 1950 he was appointed Consultant Obstetrician to West Manchester HMC and the same year published a key paper describing the value of amniotic fluid analysis in the diagnosis and treatment of rhesus babies. From 1967 to 1973 he was reader in Obstetrics at University of Sheffield. In 1973 Bevis was appointed Professor of Obstetrics at the University of Leeds. He was honorary treasurer of the North of England Obstetrical and Gynaecological Society, and was president of the Eccles and Sale Medical Societies. Bevis was also a member of the Society for the Study of Fertility. Bevis died on 25 June 1994.
