Durrington gained his medical education at the University of Manchester (MB ChB 1972, MD 1978). He became FRCP London in 1987. He held junior appointments in Bristol before being appointed lecturer in medicine at the University of Manchester in 1976. He later developed a specialism in metabolism and diabetes. In 1992 Durrington was appointed reader in medicine, and was also honorary consultant physician to MRI and the University Hospital of South Manchester. In 1995 he became professor of medicine at the University of Manchester (retired 2009) and from 1997 to 2001 director of research and development at Central Manchester NHS Trust.
