Alexander, known as Benny, was born in Salford on 11th February 1925 and studied at Manchester Grammar School. Alexander began his career with house positions at MRI and Crumpsall Hospital Manchester. He then became resident clinical pathologist at Oldham Hospital. In 1954 Alexander entered general practice and continued in the same practice until his death. He was also clinical assistant at St Mary's Hospital Manchester, Divisionary Police Surgeon and also an hon lecturer in General Practice at University of Manchester. Alexander served on the Manchester Family Practitioner Committee and was a member of the Central Manchester Health Authority from 1984. Alexander was active in many national committees and societies and became chairman of the representative body of the BMA. He was a member of Manchester Medical Society , being president of the section of General Practice. In 1977 he was made a fellow of the BMA and on 16th June 1979 was awarded a OBE.

Alexander married 1955 and had three sons. He died on 6 April 1989.
