Joan Braganza was born in India, and studied medicine at Grant Medical College, Bombay. She held house appointments at Oldham Royal Infirmary and MRI. She was appointed a honorary consultant gastroenterologist at MRI in 1978, and was a senior lecturer in gastroenterology at the University of Manchester. Braganza has made major contributions to the study of pancreatitis.
