Greenwood was born on 30 July 1945. He studied medicine at the University of Manchester and was house surgeon at Blackpool Victoria Hospital. Greenwood was district medical officer for Chililabombue, Zambia, and chief medical officer for Nevis, West Indies before returning to England as senior registrar in anaesthetics at MRI. Greenwood was later appointed consultant anaesthetist to Trafford Health Authority. Greenwood was a member of Manchester Medical Society , the Association of Anaesthetists and the Obstetrical Anaesthetists Association. Greenwood was also a founder member of the European Society for Regional Anaesthesia.
