Bell was educated at Glasgow and Edinburgh. After obtaining his degree as doctor, he travelled to London and Paris, before commencing practice in Berwick-on-Tweed in 1780. The year later he went to Manchester and was elected physician to the Infirmary. He died in April 1784.
