Ferguson studied at Manchester and at the London Hospital. While a student he was demonstrator in anatomy and physiology at the University of Manchester and was house surgeon at MRI and at the London Throat Hospital. Ferguson joined the RAMC in 1914 and was made captain the following year. He died of septicaemia at Horton War Hospital on 28 January 1919, aged thirty four.
