Bateman studied at Manchester before holding house positions at MRI and Manchester South and Maternity Hospital. He was also assistant demonstrator in anatomy at Owens College. He later became consultant surgeon at Rochdale Infirmary and honorary surgeon at Rochdale Memorial Cripples Home. Bateman was also JP for the borough of Rochdale and a member of Manchester Medical Society and of the North of England Obstetrical and Gynaecological Society. Bateman was a president of the Lancashire and Cheshire branch of the BMA.
