Boddy studied at Manchester Royal School of Medicine before taking his M.R.C.S. in 1868; he took an M.B in 1876, and an M.D. in 1884. He was later district surgeon at the Salford and Pendleton Royal Hospital; assistant physician at Manchester Northern Hospital and medical officer at Prestwich Union Workhouse.
