Chaytor received his medical education in Edinburgh, leaving in 1835 to pursue further medical studies in London and Paris. He was for a short time a physician to Durham Infirmary before moving to Manchester. Chaytor was appointed senior physical to Chorlton-on-Medlock Infirmary circa 1836. He applied for the post of physician at MRI three times before being appointed in 1841. He went on sick leave in November 1843, and died unexpectedly on 1 June 1844.
