Berwitz was born in Manchester on 4 June 1923, the first son of Samuel Henry Berwitz. He studied at the University of Manchester, although he did not take a degree. He worked at the Jewish Hospital Manchester, Warrington Infirmary, and Royal Manchester Children's Hospital, until he entered general practice in 1949 in Preston, later moving to Clayton in Manchester. He became a member of the Royal College of General Practitioners in 1956 and was a fellow of the Manchester Medical Society . He was later appointed as medical assistant in psychiatry to Cheadle Royal Hospital and later to Parkside Hospital Macclesfield. Berwitz was also medical officer for Manchester Grammar School from 1975 until his death on 5 December 1981.
