Beaumont studied at the University of Manchester where he was president of the Union from 1955-1956. After qualifying, Beaumont held various house positions at Stepping Hill Hospital, Stockport, and Withington Hospital, Manchester, specialising in paediatrics and obstetrics. He later became clinical assistant to the department of paediatrics at West Parkew Hospital Macclesfield and head of the Neuropsychiatric Research Group of Ciba-Geigy UK.
