After qualifying, Clarke held junior positions at Warneford Hospital, Leamington Spa, and hospitals in Bristol. In 1957 Clarke was appointed senior registrar in anaesthetics at South Manchester Hospital Group, being promoted to consultant in 1959. In 1963 Clarke was appointed consultant anaesthetist to United Manchester Hospitals. He later became senior employment medical advisor to the Technology and Health Sciences Division of the Health and Safety Executive. Clarke was a member of Manchester Medical Society , the Association of Anaesthetists and the Intensive Care Society.
