Cooke was born in Sheffield on 20 March 1763, and died in Manchester in 1818. After an early career in commerce, Cooke began to attend lectures in anatomy and physiology at the age of 22. He did much research into physiognomy. A book about physiognomy was compiled from his papers and published in 1819. This book also contains a biography and silhouette of Cooke.
