Evans studied medicine at Cambridge University and St Thomas's Hospital, London. He was a consultant haematologist at Royal Manchester Children's Hospital and Booth Hall Hospital Manchester between 1966 and 1992. Evans was honorary lecturer in child health at the University of Manchester between 1970 and 1992.
