Gough studied medicine at Manchester and held house positions at Crumpsall Hospital Manchester before being appointed surgical assistant at Dudley Road Hospital, Birmingham. Gough was later registrar at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital, Birmingham, before returning to Manchester as senior registrar in orthopaedics for MRI and Manchester Regional Health Board. Gough was consultant trauma and orthopaedic surgeon for Hope Hospital Salford and Royal Manchester Children's Hospital. He was a fellow of the British Orthopaedic Association.
