Barrett (nee Bentz) was born on 22 November 1887 and was educated at Manchester High School for Girls. She was one of the early female medical students at the University of Manchester, registering in 1908. After qualifying, Barrett held appointments as house surgeon at Oldham Infirmary and medical officer at the Children's Dispensary Manchester and the Children's Hospital Pendlebury. She also spent time as assistant school medical officer for Cheshire County Council before joining her husband Allan Barrett in general practice in Hulme. Barrett died on 20 November 1975.
