Gilchrist received his medical education at Owens College Manchester; he was house surgeon at MRI in 1888 and was later a member of the MRI Old Resident's Club. Gilchrist was assistant medical officer at Barnes Convalescent Hospital Manchester before practising in Crewe. Gilchrist later moved to the USA where he became clinical professor of dermatology at John Hopkins University.
