Freed was born on 31 May 1945 and studied at the University of Manchester where he was awarded the John Henry Agnew Prize in paediatrics. After qualifying, Freed held house positions at Withington Hospital Manchester before being appointed lecturer in bacteriology and virology at the University of Manchester in 1969. Freed was later honorary research fellow at Salford University and allergy consultant. Freed was a member of the British Society of Immunology, the British Allergy Society and Manchester Medical Society .
