Fletcher undertook his medical studies at the University of Manchester before being appointed clinical assistant psychiatrist at Oldham General Hospital. Fletcher then held appointments as occupational physician at Walls Meat Company and ICI, later at Sutcliffe Catering Company and the Manchester Guardian. Fletcher was honorary lecturer in the department of occupational health at the University of Manchester from 1962. He was a member of the Society for Occupational Medicine, Manchester Medico-Legal Society and Oldham Medical Society.
