Gough studied medicine at Owens College Manchester and was house surgeon at MRI before being appointed assistant surgeon at the Northern Dispensary, Liverpool. Gough later went into general practice in Northwich, and was medical officer for Northwich Union Home and honorary surgeon at Victoria Infirmary, Northwich. Gough was medical officer of health for Northwich rural and urban district councils for twenty eight years. He died in June 1929.
