Byrom was a Manchester-born medic, who trained in Montpellier. He is best known as the inventor of a system of shorthand notation and as a Jacobite sympathiser. Byrom's version of shorthand was used by John Hull for his lecture notes. Byrom wrote a diary. He taught medicine and shorthand at Manchester.
