Bamford took a PhD in Psychology at Reading, later becoming a researcher at Royal Berkshire Hospital audiology unit. In 1985 Bamford was appointed Head of West Berkshire Audiology Services and in 1988 came to Manchester as professor of audiology and education of the deaf.
