Ball was born in Lancashire on 19 September 1911. He began his career as house surgeon at MRI and demonstrator in anatomy at University of Manchester. He was later RSO at Christie Cancer Hospital and chief assistant at MRI. In 1951 Ball was appointed consultant surgeon Oldham Hospital Group, a post he held until he retired in the 1970s. Ball was a member of Manchester Medical Society , Oldham Medical Society and Manchester Medico-Ethical Society.
